By caring for patients through the Specialist Referral Clinic and Cambie Surgery Centre, and by using the most advanced techniques in foot and ankle surgery, the team aims to provide a smooth and well-coordinated experience.

Your initial consultation is arranged through the Specialist Referral Clinic and may be conducted virtually via Zoom. Weight-bearing X-rays of the foot and ankle are required in advance of this consultation. Following your assessment, we will recommend the most appropriate treatment plan, which may include orthotics, physiotherapy, injections, or surgery.

If surgery is recommended, the procedure will be scheduled once consent has been completed, the necessary equipment has been arranged, and all preoperative requirements have been met.

For most conditions, an in-person physical examination is required prior to surgery. During this visit, we will review the anticipated recovery process, expected outcomes, and provide personalized detailed guidance on pre- and post-operative care.

PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

Prior to surgery, you will need to be fasting from 12 o’clock the night before. It is important you make your way to Vancouver in time for your operation.

On the day of surgery, you will be seen in the holding area by Dr. Younger and he will sign your leg. There may be equipment required such as a walker boot, or crutches, or a wheelchair that you might need prior to surgery. You will be instructed on their use.

POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

After the operation, you will go to the Recovery Room. Depending on the anesthetic which could be local, regional, or general, you will be in the Recovery Room for a period of time. The surgery will either be scheduled as daycare at which point you will go home the same day or one night overstay. This will be determined by the size of your surgery. We will teach you how to get home and usually the leg needs to be elevated. If your foot comes down, then the blood pressure in your foot increases and there is a risk of bleeding. Ideally, the operative leg should be kept above the level of your heart during the first 24 hours after surgery. This, therefore, means finding a way to elevate your foot in a vehicle to get home if you are going home the same day. You will be given instructions when to return to clinic as well as postoperative medication. Typically, after surgery, we will have you in a splint or dressing and will be non-weight bearing for either be 48 hours, two weeks or six weeks. If you are receiving a fusion in the mid or back part of your foot, you will be non-weight bearing for six weeks. At two weeks, the sutures will be removed. At six weeks, x-rays will be obtained and we will make sure everything is healing appropriately. After two or six weeks, physiotherapy will be initiated.
